Song Club

Join our songwriting community!

Song Club is a welcoming community of songwriters committed to developing our craft as writers and growing into more kind and generous humans. 🀍

We host community-building events for songwriters and run a weekly works-in-progress song share, Thursday nights at 7 PM PST on Zoom. This is a positive space where we never tear down each other’s work, but try to enhance the songwriter’s vision and celebrate their efforts.

This is a great place to:

🎡 Practice getting songwriting feedback in a safe space
🎡 Share a little idea you had
🎡 Get motivation to keep writing a song you're stuck on
🎡 Get feedback on a song you want to release or pitch
🎡 Nerd out about the latest instrument/gear you just bought

Song Club is completely free! All levels welcome.

How It Works

  1. Log In at 7pm PST on Thursdays.

  2. Introductions: we share who we are, if we’ve brought a song this week and any other musical highlights we want to share this week.

  3. We go into breakout rooms and begin to share our songs, one at a time. Please be sure to bring lyrics if you have them! Songs can be played live or shared through demos (recorded by phones is fine).

  4. We each take turns to give feedback using the sandwich method: something we loved about the song, something that could use work, and closing positive notes.

  5. Once all songs have been shared, we come back to the main room together to share closing thoughts, share a piece of advice and ask for any other help we may need.

  6. Occasionally, if someone has released music that week, we have a listening party πŸŽ‰

FAQ

I’ve never written a song before! Can I come?

↳ Definitely! All levels of songwriters are welcome. This can be a great place to learn how to write songs, no matter if you are primarily a lyric writer, instrumentalist or just love music.

Do I have to bring a song every week?

↳ Nope! You are free to join, listen and give feedback without sharing a song of your own.

Do I have to play live?

↳ No, you can bring a demo recorded on your phone voice memos, or a fully produced song you’re still working on.

Can I record and bring a voice memo? Does the song have to be professionally recorded?

↳ You can bring a voice memo or a professional recording – whatever lets the other club members hear the song easily and give feedback.

Can I bring an unfinished song?

↳ You can bring a song in any stage it’s in (though a work-in-progress song is preferred)! Sometimes it’s just a Chorus, sometimes it’s a full song on it’s third draft. All are welcome.

Do my songs have to be produced?

↳ No amount of production is needed.

Is Song Club in-person, or are there ever in-person events?

↳ Song Club itself is on Zoom, but as many of us reside in LA, there are occasionally in-person hangouts.

Do you give production feedback?

↳ This is a place for primarily songwriting feedback, but we often have producers who are excited to give production feedback as well.

Can I just bring lyrics, or unfinished ideas?

↳ Yes!

Does anyone who gives feedback become a co-writer on my song?

↳ No feedback given at Song Club is part of a co-write, and all songs remain the songwriter’s intellectual property. That said, if you would like to write with someone from song club, you are free to reach out to each other!

Does Song Club cost money?

↳ Song Club is free to join and we fundraise for the Zoom cost once a year. There is no obligation to donate, but anything is appreciated πŸ™‚
